C2S Sustainability Focus with Commercial Group – Journey to Net Zero

 SUSTAINABILITY AND SOCIAL VALUES

At this Sustainability Focus in-person event we heard from C2S Sustainability Award winners for 2023, Commercial Group on their journey to Net Zero.

About the Event

We learnt from an organisation that is leading the way on Net Zero. What they have achieved, how they have done it and what you can be doing in your organisation towards net zero.

We had insights from Commercial Group, followed by round table discussions and sharing of ideas and feedback.

The all-morning event at Commercial’s headquarters in Cheltenham offered an insight into the business transformation specialist’s groundbreaking sustainability work.

Commercial have long been pioneers in sustainability, having made it the focus of their operations as far back as 2006. Since that decision, they have reduced their carbon intensity (emissions per £1million of revenue) by 96% and are on course to achieve carbon net zero by 2028.

That would mean hitting that target 22-years ahead of government legislation and two years ahead of the goal they agreed with the Science Based Targets initiative in 2021.

Today, Commercial’s ESG consultancy services and sustainable solutions support clients in their own journey to cut scope 3 emissions and achieve net zero.

As well as a focus on sustainability, Net Value and Social Values this event will feature the work done by the Commercial Foundation, a social enterprise founded by Commercial Managing Director Simone Hindmarch in 2015.

The Foundation achieved the celebrated B Corp accreditation in 2023 and is listed in the top 10% of social value generators in the UK by Social Value Constancy experts, LOOP.

Working alongside young adults between the ages of 16-25 who have previously experienced barriers to work or education, and has impacted more than 130 people over the last eight years.

By providing mentoring, skill development and by providing real-life on-the-job work experience at their attached print studio WE DO. Print, the Foundation really does change lives.

Overview of Company:
Founded by brother and sister Arthur and Simone Hindmarch and Arthur’s university friend Alastair Adams in a one-room office behind a sausage factory in 1991, Commercial now employs 300+ people across the country.

In 32 years, it has risen to become the UK’s largest independently-owned business services group with turnover topping £78million in 2022.

With expertise across a wide variety of sectors from office supplies to IT and smart technologies to print, MPS, workwear, facilities and PPE, Commercial is proud to put sustainability at its heart.

Commercial has been carbon neutral since 2006, zero waste to landfill from 2013 and has ambitious plans to become carbon net zero by 2028, 22 years ahead of government targets and two years ahead of the agreed timeframe we signed up to with the Science Based Targets initiative in 2021.

That laser-loke focus has seen Commercial rewarded numerous industry awards and accreditations, most notably the Queen’s Award for Sustainable Development in 2018 and win the 2023 European Office Products Award for Sustainability Excellence.

Having helped our customers navigate the unprecedented consequences of the Covid Pandemic and the challenges and opportunities created by home working and then a hybrid-working model, Commercial is now determined to help clients reach their own sustainability targets too.

Commercial also use cutting-edge thinking and technology to help clients reduce energy wastage and harness the power of renewable energy generation.

That focus on sustainability has led to a 61% real-term reduction in carbon emissions since 2006 and a 91% reduction in carbon intensity per £1million of revenue.
