Why is Gloucestershire Such a Hub for Careers?

When looking to change careers or work with a new company there may come a time when you have to relocate for the job. Right now, Gloucestershire is among the top places in the UK to work thanks to its all-encompassing package.

Ever since the COVID-19 pandemic, employees have been assessing their life’s path and have reconsidered their careers. Some looking for a better work-life balance, others prioritising their goals and others deciding to try a brand new career altogether.

Away from the hustle and bustle of city life which can be demanding on time and pocket (let’s face it London living isn’t cheap), there are pockets of the UK which are very attractive. Gloucestershire in particular has been thriving for decades, but over the last few years even more so. Not only have we got a number of household names to be proud of in the business sphere from Superdry to Ecotricity, Renishaw and Downton, we also live in one of the most beautiful locations in the country.

Full of culture, rolling hills and events all across the year, it’s easy to see why more and more families and individuals have moved to the area. Plus it’s location is pretty handy too. Only 90 minutes to Paddington Station from Stroud, a central location with easy reach to major cities, we can also relish in the tranquil surroundings that many city-workers long for. In fact, the area is so popular, last year the Sunday Times named Stroud as the best places to live across the whole of the UK. We can back this as Omega’s head office is based here! It fought off competition from the likes of Cheshire and Salisbury with its quaint farmers market, number of high-profile people moving to the area, nice walks and independent shops and cafes. Writing about the win, the Sunday Times liked its: “independent spirit in well-connected Cotswold countryside.”

In April this year, three Gloucestershire companies were announced as ‘best places to work in the UK.’ Included in the Great Places to Work rankings based on employee feedback, architecture and design firm Pentadel Project Management, wine retailer Laithwaites Wine and Kitchenware brand Pro-Cook were amongst the winners. Of Pentadel Project Management employees said that they were treated as “full team members” and it offers a “stimulating, supportive and culturally diverse” place to work.

It’s no secret that Gloucestershire has much to offer in the jobs market, and has been doing so for many years. Back in 2019, Gloucester beat London, Manchester, Edinburgh and Bristol according to recruitment site Glassdoor. Factors such as cost of living vs salary, job satisfaction and job opportunities played into this. Some of the most sought after and popular jobs announced included Software Engineer, Account Manager and Quantity Surveyor. The city still made the top three in 2020 and the survey praised the fact that companies are looking outside of big cities to set up offices whilst searching for local talent.

With much on offer across the country, Gloucestershire is certainly a hub in the careers market with a wide variety of positions on offer for all industries, experience and expertise.
