Paddling for Pounds

Worcester-based charity Onside Independent Advocacy relies on the generous donations from patrons, local businesses and individuals to support their work supporting vulnerable and disadvantaged people across Herefordshire & Worcestershire. However, this summer they have had support from a very local businessman: their next door neighbour!

Duncan Sutcliffe, director of Sutcliffe & Co Insurance Brokers, whose office is next door to Onside’s, dedicated his family’s summer holiday to raise funds for the charity. Duncan, his wife Becky and their two sons (aged 13 and 10) canoed the length of the River Severn, from Welshpool to Gloucester – a total of 127 miles. Although they had initially allowed a week to accomplish this feat, the Sutcliffe family surprised everyone, including themselves, by finishing it in 5 ½ days. Not only that, but the family were fully self-sufficient with no support team.

Kate Harvey, Onside’s chief executive, commented: “Although Sutcliffe & Co has been supporting us for years, Duncan and his family taking on this canoeing challenge in order to raise funds for us is incredible and inspirational. I am delighted to announce that their efforts have raised over £4,000 with many thanks to all of their supporters!”

Duncan added, “We wanted a unique challenge worthy of fundraising, which would also be an adventure for our kids – and canoeing the River Severn ticked all the boxes. It was an amazing experience but we’re mostly proud of the funds we have been able to raise for a charity close to our hearts.”

Onside Independent Advocacy is a Worcestershire based charity established in 1993, stemming from a belief that everyone has the right to be a valued human being and to be treated in a just and fair manner. It provides a wide range of support services to ensure fairness and equality for all members of our community who may be vulnerable, disadvantaged or discriminated against.

People like Jim, who has leaning difficulties, persuaded by his brother to take out a loan and when his brother took the money was left with a debt which he could not pay and no idea how to cope, Or Sally living in a Care Home following a fall and desperate to go home. Alone with no family or friends she was becoming desperate and losing hope of ever going home.

Sutcliffe & Co Insurance Brokers is based in Worcester, providing business and personal insurance to clients in the Three Counties and beyond.
