Outstanding Manufacturing Visit to Morgan Motor Company Looking At These Iconic Hand Built Cars, The Process, Skills and Growth

Morgan Motor Company is a family-owned manufacturer that has hand-built iconic British sports cars, famous the world over for their unique blend of craft, heritage and pure driving experience for over 120 years, right on our doorstep in Malvern, Worcestershire, making it the oldest, working car manufacturer in the word. On our visit we heard from Steve Morris, Managing Director on how they manage to retain and grow their highly skilled workforce and combine modern day technology with these hand built iconic cars, enabling them to stay at the top of their game, grow and prosper in today’s competitive market place.

Steve started his days at Morgan Motors over 30 years ago as an apprentice on the shop floor. Having worked his way up he has seen many changes and advancements but these beautiful cars are still hand made today, as they have been since the very beginning. Steve talked about their challenges today of attracting new talent into the business to ensure they continue to future proof this outstanding manufacturer. They work closely with schools and continue to increase their apprenticeship programme annually.

Every Morgan is expertly crafted using three core elements: ash, aluminium and leather. Each Morgan is truly unique, hand-built to the highest standard by passionate craftspeople, who perfect their skill over a lifetime to bring together heritage, innovation and cutting-edge technology.

C2S members had an exclusive tour of the factory looking at how these cars are hand built, from the very beginning with the frame being created to the paint shop and  interiors. Each car is designed by its owner, choosing from over 130 paint colours, the interior, to even leaving a personal message on the frame. What struck me most about this visit is the openness of this organisation, the pride of the people that work their and the very positive, vibrant atmosphere. As you walk round people are happy to stop and talk to you about what they are doing and the skills used to create each stage of these fantastic cars. They have a very high retention rate with many staff having worked there for many, many years  – people take a real pride in the job they do which in turn creates a great atmosphere in the workshops. The Morgan Motor Company Ltd. was established in 1909 by H.F.S. Morgan with the design of the now iconic Morgan Three-Wheeler. This was followed in 1936 by the Morgan 4-4, which continues to be produced today, and is the longest running production car in the world.

The ethos at Morgan has remained unchanged for over 100 years: from research and design, to paint and trim, every Morgan is coach built for the customer at Morgan’s Pickersleigh Road factory at the foot of the Malvern Hills. Leading design capability, an extensive array of luxurious materials and the latest drive-train technologies combine to create unparalleled pure driving pleasure

It was a rare treat for us to walk the line of the life of a Morgan and I would highly recommend this to everyone. They had over 30,000 visitors last year and tours are available and can be booked directly with Morgan Motor Company, along with a walk round the museum and the opportunity to hire a Morgan for the weekend.
