C2S Manufacturing Focus – Best Practice Visit to Spirax Sarco

C2S Manufacturing Focus visited Spirax-Sarco Engineering plc a multi-national industrial engineering group with expertise in the control and management of steam, electrical thermal energy solutions, peristaltic pumping and associated fluid path technologies.​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​ With 127 operating units in 47 countries, and a direct sales presence in 62 countries worldwide, they are an organisation with a global reach.

They have seen continued growth with Sales in 2018 approaching £1.5bn and have been recognised as one of Britain’s most admired companies in its sector for 3 years running and  No.12 on the UK most admired companies to work for in 2018. This outstanding organisation runs its UK head office from Cheltenham, Gloucestershire and employs 1000 people in Cheltenham, of which 580 are in the manufacturing facility. They distribute to 70 countries and machine in excess of 9 Million parts every year. This organisation is going from strength to strength and is hugely invested in STEM, encouraging more women into Manufacturing and Engineering, diversity and are always looking at new ways of working to support their growing workforce. Their site in Cheltenham cover a 23,000m² building area which includes an underground logistics tunnel to help with safe passage of employees, efficiency and traffic control.

They operate a very tight ship with a 3.5 week order book in the UK and are able to turn some products around within 24 hours, Customer service is paramount to this organisation. They have complete traceability on all parts with over 35,000 finished product part numbers and supply products to many industries from the Food & Beverage, Healthcare and Power Generation to Oil & Gas and Chemical.

In the UK alone they supply over 500,000 steam trap units, over 125,000 valves and 8,000 pumps per annum, demonstrating the size of this global giant. On our visit we heard from Paul Oakley. EMEA Supply Chain Director for Spirax Sarco Ltd on their drive for continuous improvement, their management style, culture and growth, followed by a tour of the site.

This was an inspirational visit with valuable insights, great conversations and a great example of best practice.
